Trap and Remove Doesn't Work:
Animal Control's traditional approach to feral cats may temporarily reduce the number of feral cats in a given area. But two things happen: unsterilized survivors continue to breed prolifically and other cats move into the now-available territory. This is known as the "VACUUM EFFECT".
If You Stop Feeding Feral Cats, They Won't Simply "Go Away":
A feeding ban will not make the cats go away. Why? Cats bond to their territory. If forced, they will survive by scavenging. Under a feeding ban, the cats suffer as they search for new sources of food.
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a full management plan in which feral cats already living together are humanely trapped and taken to a local spay/neuter clinic where they are evaluated, vaccinated, and sterilized. Additionally, one ear is tipped (usually the left ear) for identification. These cats are then returned to their familiar habitat where they live under the care of local residents.
